Macao will ban the import of disposable plastic knives, forks, spoons and biodegradable plastics from 2023

On September 5, the Macao Environmental Protection Bureau announced that in order to protect the environmental quality of Macao, the Macao SAR government has implemented measures to reduce plastic pollution in sequence. Following the introduction of the control measures for disposable styrofoam tableware, non-degradable disposable plastic catering strags and beverage mixers, after comprehensive analysis of the actual situation in Macao, reference to the experience of other regions, and communication and listening to the views of relevant chambers of commerce and the industry, In accordance with the provisions of Article 5, Paragraph 1 (5) of the Foreign Trade Law No. 7/2003 amended by Law No. 3/2016, the HKSAR Government prohibits the import of non-degradable disposable plastic knives, forks and spoons through the Chief Executive's Directive No. 175/2022, which will take effect on January 1, 2023.

In order to make the industry more clear about the scope of the control and the relevant specific operation requirements, the Macao Environmental Protection Bureau will hold a briefing session to further explain to the industry to ensure the effective implementation of the control measures.
